Political momentum is increasing in Plateau State as support grows for Mutfwang ahead of the 2027 general elections. Stakeholders within the All Progressives Congress, APC, community leaders, and residents across several local government areas have continued to express backing for Governor Caleb Mutfwang following recent political developments in the state. The growing support reflects ongoing political realignments and mobilisation efforts ahead of future electoral contests.
Governor Mutfwang officially joined the APC earlier this year after leaving the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP. His movement to the ruling party marked a major political shift within Plateau politics and attracted endorsements from several APC leaders and supporters. Senior party officials, including Vice President Kashim Shettima and APC governors, attended his reception ceremony in Jos following the defection announcement.
Across Jos North, Barkin Ladi, Mangu, Riyom, Shendam, Langtang North, Kanam, and Wase, residents interviewed by Vanguard linked their support to governance projects and political stability under the current administration. Some residents cited road rehabilitation, rural development initiatives, and improved engagement with communities as reasons behind the increasing support for the governor.
One resident, Promise Yatu, stated that the governor had demonstrated commitment to governance since assuming office. According to him, “Mutfwang has demonstrated capacity and commitment. Based on what we have seen so far, he deserves another opportunity to consolidate on these gains.”
Political observers said support grows for Mutfwang partly because of expanding APC structures across the state. Since the governor joined the party, APC stakeholders have intensified grassroots mobilisation and consultations in several communities. Local political leaders have also continued engagement meetings aimed at strengthening party cohesion before the 2027 elections.
Analysts also pointed to the emerging relationship between Mutfwang and former Plateau governor Simon Lalong as a significant political development within the APC. The growing collaboration between both camps has drawn attention among political stakeholders monitoring future alignments within the North-Central region.
Meanwhile, opposition parties in Plateau have continued internal consultations and restructuring efforts ahead of future elections. Some PDP stakeholders recently urged members to remain committed to the party despite recent defections and changing political alliances within the state.
The political atmosphere has continued to evolve as support grows for Mutfwang across Plateau communities and party structures. Stakeholders expect political activities, consultations, and strategic meetings to intensify further as preparations continue ahead of the next election cycle.
