The Southwest PDP faction crisis escalated on April 21, 2026. Party groups clashed over Governor Seyi Makinde and Ayodele Fayose. The dispute highlights growing divisions within the opposition party.
The Peoples Democratic Party faces internal divisions nationwide. The Southwest zone remains a key political stronghold. Recent tensions reflect broader leadership disputes within the party. Factional disagreements have persisted over control and direction.
A faction aligned with Governor Seyi Makinde declared support for him. The group reaffirmed loyalty to the National Working Committee. The committee is led by Aminu Turaki.
The zonal publicity secretary, Sanya Atofarati, spoke in Ibadan. He said the leadership supports Makinde’s governance approach. He added the party seeks stability and national development. Atofarati stated: “stands firmly behind Governor Seyi Makinde.” The faction dismissed impeachment claims against the governor. It described such reports as attempts to create tension.
The group criticised Ayodele Fayose’s recent remarks. It called them “reckless and divisive.” The statement said such comments could incite discord. It also warned against politicising traditional institutions. The faction maintained Fayose remains expelled from the party. It urged him to avoid actions that could create friction.
Meanwhile, another faction loyal to Nyesom Wike rejected the claims. It disowned the Ibadan press conference entirely. Akinloye Oyeniyi issued a statement for that faction. He described the event as organised by “impostors.” He said zonal leaders were not present in Ibadan. He added the press conference claim was “a barefaced lie.”
The Southwest PDP faction crisis may weaken party cohesion. Internal divisions could affect strategic political coordination. It may also influence preparations for future elections. The dispute reflects ongoing leadership struggles within the party. Such tensions could impact opposition strength nationally.
