Senatorial candidate imposition claims in Enugu spark NDC aspirants’ warning

Concerns over a senatorial candidate have emerged in Enugu North Senatorial District as stakeholders under the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) caution against alleged imposition. The group warned that selecting a senatorial candidate through non-transparent processes could destabilise internal party unity ahead of the 2027 elections. The stakeholders said credible participation must guide the emergence of a senatorial candidate for Enugu North. They stressed that fairness, popularity, and grassroots acceptance should determine who becomes the party’s flag bearer.

The warning follows rising political tension within the NDC structure in Enugu State. Stakeholders from Nsukka political bloc raised concerns over what they described as growing influence of financial power in candidate selection.

They argued that past elections in Enugu North have shown voter preference for candidates with strong grassroots connection. The group referenced long-standing expectations around equitable political representation across local government areas in the district. The dispute reflects broader concerns about internal democracy within political parties during pre-election processes. Aspirants insist that transparent primaries remain critical for selecting a legitimate senatorial candidate.

In a statement signed by Chief Ugwuoke Odo on behalf of concerned stakeholders, the group warned against allowing financial influence to determine the outcome of the senatorial ticket process. The statement cautioned that any attempt to impose a senatorial candidate could trigger political backlash within the district. It also raised concerns about an unnamed aspirant allegedly linked to monetary influence in the race.

The stakeholders said such developments were already generating anxiety among party members and observers in Enugu North. They further called on party leadership to ensure that all aspirants are given equal opportunity in a competitive primary process. The group maintained that only a credible and broadly accepted senatorial candidate can secure electoral success.

The statement also appealed for respect of existing political understanding within the district. It warned that disregarding internal agreements could disrupt stability among the local government areas making up Enugu North. Stakeholders also emphasised that candidates must demonstrate integrity, humility, and broad acceptance to qualify as a viable senatorial candidate.

The disagreement over a senatorial candidate highlights recurring tensions in party primaries across Nigeria. Political observers note that disputes over candidate selection often weaken party cohesion before general elections.

In Enugu North, unresolved disagreements could affect mobilisation efforts ahead of 2027. Stakeholders argue that fairness in selecting a senatorial candidate remains essential for maintaining trust among supporters. The situation also underscores the importance of internal democratic processes in strengthening political legitimacy. Transparent primaries are viewed as key to avoiding post-primary disputes and legal challenges.
