The PDP candidates list published by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has put to rest months of uncertainty surrounding the opposition party’s participation in the 2027 general elections, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has declared. The party said the publication confirms its readiness for the presidential election and silences claims that it would be unable to present candidates due to its prolonged leadership and legal disputes.
In a statement issued on Sunday by its National Publicity Secretary, Hon. Jungudo Haruna Mohammed, the PDP described INEC’s publication as a decisive moment that validates the party’s position after months of speculation.
According to the party, the electoral commission has officially recognised Distinguished Senator Prof. Sandy Ojang Onor as its presidential candidate, with Alhaji Babangida Umar named as the vice-presidential candidate for the 2027 election. The PDP said the development confirms that due legal processes have been followed.
“Today, the facts have prevailed, the law has taken its course, and the PDP has once again been vindicated,” the statement said.
The party argued that the publication of the PDP candidates list has effectively ended what it described as a sustained campaign of misinformation aimed at creating doubts over its ability to participate in the 2027 polls. According to Jungudo, critics had attempted to discourage supporters by suggesting the PDP would fail to produce a valid presidential ticket. He maintained that INEC’s action has now settled the matter.
The PDP expressed gratitude to its members and supporters, saying their patience and loyalty helped sustain the party throughout months of uncertainty. It also commended INEC, the judiciary and security agencies for carrying out their constitutional responsibilities, stating that their commitment to the rule of law contributed to the resolution of the party’s internal challenges.
The party reaffirmed its commitment to reconciliation and internal unity as preparations for the 2027 elections continue. It extended an invitation to aggrieved members to return, stressing that collective interests should take precedence over personal disagreements. The PDP also welcomed returning members and recent defectors, describing their decision as a sign of growing confidence in the party’s prospects ahead of the next general election.
The party said it remains committed to presenting what it described as a credible and unifying alternative for Nigerians under the leadership of its National Chairman, Hon. Abdulrahman Mohammed Takushara, and National Secretary, Distinguished Senator Samuel N. Anyanwu. According to the PDP, the publication of the PDP candidates list marks a significant milestone in its rebuilding efforts and reassures supporters that it remains firmly in the race to reclaim power in the 2027 presidential election.
