The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has clarified that there was no fire outbreak at Terminal 2 of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA), Lagos, following an incident that initially sparked concerns among passengers and airport users. The authority said normal activities have fully resumed at the terminal while investigations continue into what triggered the MMIA fire scare.

In an update issued after the incident, FAAN’s Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, Mr. Henry Agbebire, explained that the smoke seen inside the terminal was caused by the discharge of the facility’s FM-200 fire suppression system rather than an actual fire. According to FAAN, preliminary findings ruled out any fire at the terminal, although the exact reason the automated suppression system activated is still under investigation.

The authority noted that emergency protocols were promptly implemented to ensure the safety of passengers, staff and airport facilities, adding that there were no casualties or injuries recorded during the incident. FAAN stated that the airport has since returned to normal operations, with flight activities and passenger services continuing without disruption.

The agency assured travellers and other stakeholders that a comprehensive investigation is underway to determine what caused the FM-200 fire suppression system to discharge unexpectedly. It added that the findings of the investigation would help prevent similar occurrences and strengthen safety measures across airport facilities.

FAAN also expressed appreciation to passengers, airlines, airport users and other stakeholders for their patience and cooperation during the brief disruption. Reaffirming its commitment to safety, the authority said protecting passengers, personnel and airport infrastructure remains its highest priority as it works to maintain secure and efficient airport operations across the country.
