The Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, Kaduna State University, KASU, chapter, has suspended its industrial action following the Kaduna State Government’s approval of a key agreement covering academic staff.

The decision followed the government’s approval of the implementation and domestication of the 2025 Federal Government and ASUU agreement for academic staff at the university.

ASUU KASU announced the suspension after an emergency congress held at the university’s 1,000-seater auditorium.

In a statement signed by the chapter’s Chairman, Comrade Abubakar Abdullahi, and Secretary, Comrade Silas Amos Bakut, the union said implementation of the approved agreement would begin in October 2026.

The union also disclosed that the university’s Governing Council and Management had approved the payment of nine months of accrued arrears covering January to September 2026.

The approvals followed discussions involving ASUU, the Kaduna State Government, the university’s Governing Council and its Management.

According to the union, the negotiations focused particularly on implementing the 2025 FGN-ASUU agreement and adopting the new conditions of service applicable to academic staff in Nigerian universities.

ASUU said the development is expected to improve staff welfare and retention while contributing to greater stability and productivity within the university.

Following the approvals, the KASU ASUU congress unanimously agreed to suspend the strike. The suspension takes effect from 12:01am on Friday, September 18, 2026.

The union commended the Kaduna State Governor and Visitor to KASU for approving the implementation of the agreement.

It described the decision as an indication of the government’s commitment to staff welfare and the continued development of the university.

ASUU KASU also acknowledged members of the government negotiation team for their attention to the issues raised during the discussions.

The union further praised KASU management for supplying relevant documents and information that helped facilitate the resolution of the dispute.

It particularly highlighted the conduct of the government and university authorities throughout the industrial action. According to the union, the parties demonstrated patience, restraint and respect for established procedures during the negotiations.

ASUU said its members were not subjected to threats or intimidation during the dispute. It added that the union was allowed to follow its internal processes for both declaring and suspending the industrial action.

The lecturers described the approach as an example of constructive engagement and respect for due process in industrial relations.

With the strike suspended, ASUU KASU said its members were prepared to return to academic activities and welcome students back to their classrooms.

The union also thanked students, stakeholders and members of the public for their patience and support throughout the dispute.

It concluded its statement with its familiar declaration: “Aluta Continua, Victoria Ascerta.”
