Cardoso Wins Central Bank of the Year Award in London

Cardoso Wins Central Bank recognition after the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Mr. Olayemi Cardoso, received the Central Bank of the Year Award at the Central Banking Awards ceremony held recently in London. The award acknowledges the institution’s reform efforts and contributions toward strengthening economic stability in Nigeria.

The Central Banking Awards recognise outstanding achievements by central banks and financial institutions across the world. The recognition comes at a period when many economies continue to face inflationary pressures, currency challenges, and evolving financial sector demands. Nigeria’s apex bank has implemented several policy measures in recent years aimed at stabilising the economy, improving confidence in financial markets, and strengthening institutional credibility.

While accepting the award, Cardoso expressed gratitude to Central Banking Publications and the award judges for the recognition. He dedicated the honour to members of the CBN Board, management, and staff, describing the achievement as a collective accomplishment rather than an individual success.

“I accept this award on behalf of the Board, Management and staff of the CBN,” Cardoso said. “Above all, it belongs to the many dedicated professionals who serve our institution with integrity, expertise, and an unwavering commitment to the public good.”

As Cardoso Wins Central Bank recognition, he emphasised the contributions of staff members whose work often takes place outside public attention but remains critical to the institution’s operations and credibility. According to him, their dedication, professionalism, and commitment have helped strengthen the Central Bank and reinforce confidence in Nigeria’s economy.

Cardoso noted that central banks globally have faced significant challenges in recent years, with Nigeria also navigating economic pressures and policy adjustments.

He highlighted measures undertaken by the CBN to address inflation, reform the foreign exchange market, and improve critical digital and financial infrastructure. The governor explained that these reforms were designed to restore confidence in monetary policy, strengthen institutional resilience, and support sustainable economic growth.

He pointed to the importance of maintaining a long-term strategy focused on stability, transparency, and credibility. According to him, the reform agenda has remained guided by the objective of building a stronger financial system capable of supporting national development goals.

The recognition is expected to strengthen the profile of the Central Bank within the global financial community. It also highlights ongoing efforts to improve policy effectiveness and reinforce confidence in Nigeria’s financial institutions.

Analysts note that institutional credibility remains an important factor in attracting investment, maintaining financial stability, and supporting broader economic growth. The award comes amid continued implementation of monetary and financial sector reforms aimed at addressing macroeconomic challenges.

As Cardoso Wins Central Bank of the Year recognition in London, the award underscores international acknowledgment of the CBN’s reform initiatives and institutional strengthening efforts. Cardoso reaffirmed the bank’s commitment to preserving public trust, maintaining monetary and financial stability, and executing its mandate with integrity, professionalism, and accountability.
