The Social Democratic Party, SDP, has adopted its 2023 presidential flag bearer, Adewole Adebayo, as SDP sole candidate for the 2027 presidential election following resolutions reached during the party’s national convention in Bauchi State. Delegates endorsed the decision through a consensus voice vote after a motion moved by the chairman of SDP state chairmen and Lagos State chairman, Femi Olaniyi Ferrari. The convention also produced new national officers through consensus-based voting processes.
The SDP sole candidate decision emerged during the party’s 2026 National Convention attended by delegates, state executives, ward leaders, and stakeholders from across the country. Party officials described the convention as peaceful and orderly, noting that most positions were filled unopposed after screening exercises conducted in line with the party constitution.
Adewole Adebayo represented the SDP during the 2023 presidential election and has remained active in national political discussions since the poll. The lawyer and businessman has repeatedly called for reforms in governance, electoral transparency, and broader democratic participation ahead of the next election cycle.
Political activities within opposition parties have intensified ahead of 2027 as parties continue consultations, conventions, and leadership restructuring efforts. Several parties have also begun early positioning ahead of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, timetable for party primaries and general elections.
The emergence of Adebayo as SDP sole candidate places the party among the earliest political platforms to publicly identify a presidential standard bearer ahead of the next election cycle.
During the convention, delegates adopted a voice vote process to confirm screened candidates for national offices. Party leaders stated that the approach reduced internal disputes and strengthened consensus within the organisation.
Among officials elected during the convention was Chief Lekan Alabi, who emerged as Leader of Persons With Disability after unanimous endorsement by delegates. Mrs Rosemary Ediom was also returned as National Welfare Officer after emerging as the only qualified candidate for the office.
Professor Gombe, speaking after the convention, thanked delegates for supporting the new National Working Committee. He described the mandate as a responsibility to reposition the party ahead of the 2027 elections. He said party leaders from states, local governments, wards, and units contributed to the smooth conduct of the convention.
The SDP sole candidate outcome also followed criticisms raised during the convention concerning Nigeria’s democratic environment. Former SDP National Chairman, Dr Olu Agunloye, and other party figures accused the ruling party of shrinking democratic space and weakening opposition activities through political pressure and institutional imbalance.
The emergence of Adebayo as SDP sole candidate signals the party’s intention to begin early mobilisation ahead of the 2027 presidential contest. Political analysts believe the move may strengthen the party’s internal coordination and campaign planning efforts.
The development also reflects increasing political activity among opposition parties seeking relevance before the next election cycle. Stakeholders expect coalition talks, defections, and strategic alignments to intensify as preparations continue nationwide. The SDP sole candidate decision may also influence internal calculations among smaller opposition parties considering partnerships and electoral cooperation ahead of the polls.
