Academic activities at Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko (AAUA), have been brought to a halt following the commencement of an indefinite industrial action by the institution’s chapter of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) over unpaid salary arrears.

The AAUA strike officially took effect on Friday, July 10, 2026, after the union resolved at its congress meetings held on April 28 and June 18 to withdraw services until outstanding salaries are fully settled. In a notice signed by the chapter chairperson, Comrade Bolu Oshodi, ASUU described the action as “total, comprehensive and indefinite,” stressing that members would not return to classrooms until salaries for May and June 2026 had been paid in full.

According to the union, repeated engagements with the university management and the Ondo State Government have yet to produce a satisfactory outcome, leaving lecturers with no option but to suspend academic activities. ASUU maintained that the AAUA strike would continue until all salary arrears are cleared, insisting that the welfare of its members remains a priority.

The union also expressed concern over what it described as persistent funding challenges affecting the institution. It revealed that previous letters sent to Ondo State Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa on the salary crisis had not received any official response. The industrial action is expected to disrupt lectures, examinations and other academic programmes across the state-owned university, leaving thousands of students uncertain about the continuation of the academic session.

ASUU reiterated that its decision was based on resolutions democratically reached during its congresses and insisted that members would remain off duty until the government addresses the outstanding financial obligations. With the AAUA strike now underway, attention is expected to shift to negotiations between the Ondo State Government, the university authorities and the union in a bid to restore normal academic activities.
