Former Edo State Governor and Senator Adams Oshiomhole has criticised the 2027 presidential ambition of Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate Peter Obi, describing his promise to transform Nigeria within a single four-year term as unrealistic and driven by desperation. Speaking on Obi’s campaign promises, Oshiomhole questioned the former Anambra governor’s political consistency, arguing that his actions over the years contradict the image he now presents to Nigerians.
Speaking on the Oshiomhole attacks Obi narrative, the APC chieftain recalled that Obi had once pledged loyalty to the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) out of respect for the late Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu. According to him, Obi abandoned the party immediately after completing his tenure as governor.
“The Peter Obi that was governor of Anambra State is not the Peter Obi of today,” Oshiomhole said, adding that Obi became “a political wanderer” after leaving office.
Oshiomhole also argued that Obi’s business background as a trader makes him ill-suited for the long-term planning required to manage a country like Nigeria.
He claimed traders typically focus on short-term gains, unlike manufacturers and long-term investors who build strategies over several years. The senator further alleged that Obi’s commercial interests encourage importation rather than domestic production, accusing him of supporting activities that export jobs while increasing unemployment at home.
While criticising Obi, Oshiomhole praised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, saying the administration inherited significant economic challenges but had chosen to implement difficult reforms aimed at securing Nigeria’s future.
He likened the government’s economic measures to a necessary surgical operation, insisting that although painful, the policies are designed to produce long-term benefits for the country. According to him, leadership sometimes requires unpopular decisions that ultimately strengthen the economy.
Oshiomhole also questioned Obi’s repeated assurance that he could fix Nigeria within a single four-year tenure. He argued that if the former governor could not completely transform Anambra State after serving two terms, it would be difficult to convince Nigerians that similar reforms could be achieved nationwide within four years. The senator described the promise as unrealistic and said it reflected political desperation rather than practical governance.
Continuing the Oshiomhole attacks Obi criticism, the APC lawmaker also referenced Obi’s past remarks during xenophobic attacks in South Africa, suggesting they demonstrated poor judgment for someone aspiring to become Nigeria’s president.
He concluded by saying Obi’s campaign promises lacked credibility and maintained that the NDC candidate would be “the easiest person to engage in a presidential debate.” Oshiomhole’s remarks add to the growing political exchanges ahead of the 2027 general election as major parties intensify their campaigns and challenge one another’s records, leadership credentials and policy proposals.
