The MOAUM ASUU Strike has been suspended after 52 days following the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), the Benue State Government and the management of Moses Orshio Adasu University, Makurdi (MOAUM). The decision brings an end to the industrial action that began on June 1, 2026, over issues including unpaid staff entitlements, promotion arrears and other welfare-related concerns.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, Chairman of ASUU-MOAUM, Dr. Ako Sule, disclosed that the union’s National Executive Council (NEC) approved the suspension after negotiations among the three parties resulted in a tripartite agreement. According to Sule, the suspension took immediate effect following the successful signing of the MoU.
“The decision to suspend the industrial action became necessary following the successful signing of a Memorandum of Understanding arising from a tripartite agreement involving the Union, the Benue State Government and the University Administration,” he said.
The ASUU chairman said the agreement reflects the commitment of the union, the Benue State Government and the university management to resolving the issues that triggered the strike through dialogue and mutual understanding.
He stressed that while the union had demonstrated goodwill by suspending the industrial action, it expected all parties to honour the terms of the agreement. According to Sule, lasting industrial peace can only be achieved when agreements reached through collective bargaining are implemented faithfully and without delay.
“The Union expects the government and the University Administration to faithfully implement the terms of the MoU and respect the principles and rules of collective bargaining,” he stated.
Following the suspension of the MOAUM ASUU Strike, the union directed all academic staff members of the university to return to their official duties immediately. Sule urged lecturers to continue carrying out their responsibilities professionally while the implementation of the agreement progresses.
The union also expressed appreciation to its members, students, parents and the general public for their patience, understanding and support throughout the 52-day industrial action. ASUU reaffirmed its commitment to protecting the welfare of its members while promoting the growth and development of Moses Orshio Adasu University through constructive dialogue and engagement.
The suspension of the MOAUM ASUU Strike is expected to pave the way for the resumption of academic activities, provided the Benue State Government and the university management fully implement the provisions contained in the Memorandum of Understanding.
