Sanwo-Olu Unveils Hamzat, Sonayon-James as Lagos APC Flagbearers

Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has unveiled his deputy, Obafemi Hamzat, and Princess Damilola Sonayon-James as Lagos APC Flagbearers for the forthcoming governorship election. The announcement signals the party’s move to consolidate its position in the state ahead of the next electoral cycle.

The announcement was made via the governor’s verified X handle on Thursday. Sanwo-Olu described the ticket as a continuation of his administration’s governance approach, built on continuity, competence, and inclusive leadership.

The development follows internal party processes that produced Dr. Obafemi Hamzat as the governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress during the primary election held at the APC secretariat in Ogba on May 21. Governor Sanwo-Olu stated that the selection reflects confidence in the capacity of both individuals to sustain development efforts in Lagos State.

“The true test of sustainable governance is the ability to pass the baton to proven hands, guided by minds that see the future clearly,” he said.

As Lagos APC Flagbearers, Hamzat and Sonayon-James were described as representing continuity and progress within the state’s political structure.

Sanwo-Olu praised Dr. Obafemi Hamzat, describing him as a loyal partner in governance and a committed public servant. “Dr. Obafemi Hamzat has proven himself to be a dedicated public servant, a dependable partner in governance and a steadfast advocate for progress,” he said.

He also highlighted Princess Damilola Sonayon-James as a leader with experience in sustainability and grassroots development. “Joining him as his running mate is Princess Damilola Sonayon-James, a respected leader, sustainability professional, and grassroots champion,” Sanwo-Olu stated.

According to the governor, the pair possess the competence and energy needed to advance development in Lagos State. “Together, they bring the experience, competence, and energy needed to build on our achievements and move Lagos forward,” he added.

Sanwo-Olu called on party members, stakeholders, and residents to support the APC Flagbearers as preparations intensify for the upcoming governorship election.

“I invite party faithful, stakeholders, and all Lagosians to support this team as we continue our shared mission of building a Greater Lagos,” he said. Hamzat’s emergence as the APC candidate was confirmed following the party’s primary election, where he reportedly secured 657,917 votes out of 657,974 accredited votes. His challenger, Lanre Jim-Kamal, received one vote.

The unveiling of the Lagos APC Flagbearers signals early consolidation within the ruling party in Lagos State. Political stakeholders are expected to intensify engagements as parties position themselves for the forthcoming election cycle.

The announcement also reinforces continuity within the current administration’s political structure, with emphasis on governance stability and policy direction.

With the emergence of Hamzat and Sonayon-James as Lagos APC Flagbearers, the ruling party has begun early preparations for the next governorship contest in Lagos State. The governor has urged unity and collective support as the political landscape gradually takes shape ahead of the election.
