PDP faction crisis deepens as Wike, Makinde camps clash over control

The PDP faction crisis escalated on Tuesday after rival camps aligned with Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike and Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde exchanged strong accusations over the control and future direction of the Peoples Democratic Party. The confrontation followed disagreements over party leadership, convention plans, and recognition of internal structures ahead of the 2027 general elections. Both factions insisted they represent the legitimate authority within the PDP, deepening uncertainty over the party’s internal stability.

The Peoples Democratic Party has faced prolonged internal disputes since the aftermath of the 2023 elections. Tensions within the opposition party intensified after disagreements emerged over leadership succession, regional influence, and party administration.

Nyesom Wike and Seyi Makinde were previously members of the G5 governors’ bloc, which opposed the PDP presidential arrangement during the 2023 elections. However, their political alliance later deteriorated amid disagreements over the future direction of the party.

The ongoing PDP faction crisis has also generated multiple court cases and competing claims to party leadership structures. These legal disputes have affected preparations for conventions, primaries, and administrative control within the party.

Speaking during a media chat in Abuja, Wike challenged the faction linked to Makinde and senior lawyer Kabiru Turaki to demonstrate its legitimacy by opening an official party bank account and secretariat. Wike said: “If they are sure they are the authentic leadership of the PDP, let them open an official PDP account.”

He further warned that any parallel office established in Abuja under the PDP name would be sealed by the Federal Capital Territory Administration. According to him, the rival camp lacked the legal authority and authentic documents required to operate the party structure.

The minister also accused the opposing faction of disregarding court rulings and misleading party members regarding leadership legitimacy. He described attempts to establish alternative structures as illegal.

On the opposing side, the Makinde-aligned bloc insisted that planned conventions and primaries would proceed despite resistance from Wike’s camp. Party figures within the faction argued that internal democratic processes could not be halted by political intimidation.

Earlier statements from Makinde had also reflected the intensity of the crisis, with the governor accusing unnamed elements of undermining the party’s stability over several years.

The worsening PDP faction crisis raises concerns about the opposition party’s preparedness ahead of the 2027 elections. Prolonged leadership disputes could affect internal coordination, candidate selection, and coalition-building efforts.

Political analysts have noted that unresolved factional divisions may weaken the PDP’s national influence at a time when opposition parties are attempting broader realignments. The situation may also influence legislative alliances and state-level party structures across the country.

The crisis further highlights persistent structural challenges within Nigerian political parties, particularly regarding leadership transition, judicial intervention, and internal dispute management.
