Awkunanaw endorses Mbah for a second term ahead of the 2027 governorship election in Enugu State, as prominent political leaders declared there is “no vacancy” in the Government House, citing his performance in office and the need for continuity in governance.
The Awkunanaw clan, a major political and socio-cultural bloc in Enugu State, comprises communities in Enugu South Local Government Area and parts of Nkanu West. The group has historically played a significant role in shaping political outcomes in the state through collective decisions and endorsements.
The early endorsement comes amid growing political alignments ahead of the 2027 elections, as stakeholders across the state begin consultations and strategic positioning. Such endorsements are often seen as signals of grassroots support and elite consensus within the state’s political structure.
At a well-attended rally held at the Awkunanaw Civic Centre in Akegbe-Ugwu, political leaders including former Senate President, Ken Nnamani, and former governor of old Anambra State, Jim Nwobodo, expressed support for Governor Peter Mbah’s second term ambition.
Speaking at the event, Nnamani said the endorsement reflected a collective decision by the people of Awkunanaw, adding that the governor’s performance justified the call for continuity. He urged stakeholders in the state to maintain unity and sustain ongoing development efforts.
Representing Nwobodo, a speaker at the event stated that the Awkunanaw people had long-standing ties with the governor and that the endorsement was based on trust and observed progress under his administration. He added that the declaration of “no vacancy” was a clear message regarding the 2027 governorship race.
The Secretary to the Enugu State Government, Prof. Chidiebere Onyia, also addressed the gathering, describing the endorsement as a reflection of the people’s satisfaction with the administration. He noted that reforms across infrastructure, education, healthcare, and security sectors have contributed to the support base for the governor.
Community leaders and stakeholders present at the rally echoed similar sentiments, stating that the endorsement represented the collective will of the Awkunanaw people. Cultural displays and symbolic gestures formed part of the event, reinforcing unity within the clan.
The Awkunanaw endorses Mbah position signals an early consolidation of political support within a key voting bloc in Enugu State. It may influence internal party dynamics and shape the emergence of candidates as the election cycle approaches.
The declaration of “no vacancy” suggests a preference for continuity in governance and could reduce intra-party contestation. It also highlights the influence of regional blocs in determining political direction within the state.
