The Nigeria Governors Forum has said it has submitted its contribution on a proposed state police framework to the Nuhu Ribadu, with the document expected to be sent to the National Assembly of Nigeria for review.
The submission was confirmed by the NGF Chairman and AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq during a meeting with President Bola Tinubu at his residence in Ikoyi, Lagos.
AbdulRazaq said discussions on the state police framework are ongoing among various security organisations, led by the National Security Adviser.
AbdulRazaq told reporters that the document submitted by the governors would be transmitted to the National Assembly “to see how we can have a legislative framework for state police.”
He explained that the governors had made their contribution to the process, which is part of broader deliberations involving security agencies and stakeholders.
The governor said the meeting with President Tinubu included discussions on the ongoing consultations on state policing.
AbdulRazaq also reaffirmed the governors’ commitment to strengthening collaboration with security forces to address insecurity, expand infrastructure, and improve the welfare of citizens.
He told journalists:
“As governors, we commit to renew our collaboration with security forces to defeat terrorism steadily, expand infrastructure opportunities and improve the lives of our people.”
AbdulRazaq congratulated President Tinubu on his state visit to the United Kingdom, describing it as “bold and significant” and saying it was the first in 37 years.
He expressed confidence that the agreements signed and the new approach to shared interests with the UK would strengthen the existing relationship and bring prosperity to Nigerians.
According to the governors’ forum, the submission of the state police contribution is part of ongoing discussions on how to develop a legislative framework for decentralised policing in Nigeria.
Transmission of the proposal to the National Assembly would place it before lawmakers, who have been identified previously as preparing to debate state police alongside other constitutional review matters.
