Dangote Cement Plc has launched a Safety FairPlay Initiative at its Ibese Plant in Ogun State as part of efforts to transform workplace safety culture and drive behavioural change among employees, the company said.
The pilot programme is designed to be rolled out across all Dangote Cement operations nationwide as part of a broader commitment to safer working practices.
The initiative was unveiled during a launch event attended by plant management and staff, reflecting strong participation and a shared commitment to embedding safety as an everyday operational value.
The Safety FairPlay framework emphasises transparent and equitable safety management to foster responsibility at all organisational levels.
Built on three core pillars: Recognition, Correction (Coaching) and Discipline. The programme aims to reward positive safety behaviour, ensure consistent coaching on corrective actions, and encourage open reporting of safety incidents, near‑misses and errors, Dangote Cement stated in its rollout documents.
Mr. Anandam Duraisamy, Technical Director at Dangote Cement, described the initiative as strategically important for the company’s long‑term operations and safety performance. “Safety FairPlay is about building trust, consistency and accountability in how we manage safety.
When people know that safe behaviour is recognised, risky actions are fairly addressed, and everyone is treated equitably, safety becomes a shared responsibility and a true part of our culture,” he said.
Duraisamy said the initiative represents a defining moment in Dangote Cement’s journey toward establishing a workplace where safety is embedded not only in policies but in daily habits and decision‑making.
He urged employees to embrace the cultural shift and champion safer work practices in all aspects of their duties.
At the event, Mr. Elvis Akalusi, Head of Health, Safety and Environment at the Ibese Plant, commended Dangote Cement’s leadership for introducing a programme that integrates safety into daily operations.
Akalusi said the initiative offers tools, coaching and recognition mechanisms to help workers make safer decisions consistently and with confidence.
Industry analysts say initiatives like Safety FairPlay can reinforce corporate governance in Nigeria’s industrial sector by prioritising worker welfare and reducing the frequency and severity of workplace accidents.
Embedding safety culture is viewed as a critical component of operational resilience and long‑term sustainability for large manufacturing firms.
Dangote Cement’s Safety FairPlay programme underscores growing attention among Nigerian manufacturers and industrial operators on elevating occupational health and safety standards and aligning workplace behaviour with global best practices.
The pilot at the Ibese Plant marks the beginning of a phased rollout of the initiative across other cement plants in the Dangote Cement network, indicating an organisational shift toward proactive safety management and continuous improvement in workplace culture.
