Anambra Governor Calls on Igbos to End Self‑Marginalisation in Nigeria

Governor Chukwuma Soludo of Anambra State has called on youths in the South‑East to stop what he described as self‑marginalisation by not fully participating in Nigeria’s national institutions, saying greater involvement — such as enlistment in the Nigerian

Armed Forces — would help them secure a stronger stake in the country’s future, officials said on Friday, January 16, 2026.

Soludo spoke during a wreath‑laying ceremony in Awka to mark the 2026 Armed Forces Celebration and Remembrance Day and the 56th anniversary of the end of the Nigerian Civil War. He said the ceremony was meant to honour those who gave their lives in service of the nation and to remind Nigerians of the war’s lessons.

“We are remembering not just members of our armed forces who died during that needless war, but all those who paid the supreme price afterwards… never again,” he said.

The governor expressed concern about the low number of recruits from Anambra and the wider South‑East in the Nigerian military and police, describing this trend as a form of self‑marginalisation that limits full participation in national life.

He urged young people to view national service as a way to contribute to the country and strengthen their role as co‑owners of Project Nigeria.

Soludo stressed that the civil war ended more than five decades ago and that Nigerians should move beyond past divisions, embrace unity, and work together to grow the nation.

He encouraged youths to pursue opportunities in national institutions, noting that failing to participate could mean future generations lack representation in key sectors of governance and security.

Addressing ongoing security challenges, the governor called on individuals involved in violent activities — including those in hiding or armed groups — to lay down their weapons and reintegrate into society.

He said the era of terror must end and that the state government would support former fighters to become productive citizens.

Soludo also praised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and military commanders for their work in tackling terrorism and insecurity, expressing confidence that concerted efforts would lead to improved peace and stability across the country.

The governor’s remarks are expected to feed into broader calls for increased youth engagement in national duties and institutions. Observers say this message could shape discussions on youth participation, security sector representation, and regional inclusion in national development.
