President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has stated that Nigeria has overcome major economic difficulties, noting that state governors no longer rely on bank loans to pay workers’ salaries.
Tinubu made the remarks while hosting religious and traditional leaders for an interfaith breaking of the fast at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.
The event was attended by leaders from different faiths and traditional institutions across the country.
According to the President, the economic situation was difficult when his administration assumed office, but reforms introduced by the government have helped stabilise the country’s finances.
He said:
“It was very daunting and challenging when we took over. But today I can say with pride and joy that we have survived.”
Tinubu added that financial conditions for state governments have improved, stressing that governors no longer approach banks to obtain loans to meet salary obligations.
“No governor in this country is running around the banks to borrow money to pay the salaries of their workers,” he said.
The President expressed appreciation for the opportunity to serve Nigerians, stating that he remains committed to carrying out his responsibilities faithfully and sustaining economic progress.
He said the government would continue efforts aimed at strengthening economic growth and improving the welfare of citizens.
Tinubu also addressed the issue of national security during the gathering. He acknowledged that the country still faces security challenges but assured that the government remains determined to confront threats to peace and stability.
According to him, criminal groups involved in violent activities are under pressure from security operations, but the government will not allow instability to undermine the country’s unity and sovereignty.
The President assured the religious and traditional leaders that Nigeria would not surrender to threats posed by violent groups and reaffirmed the government’s commitment to protecting lives and property.
He further acknowledged the role of religious and traditional leaders in promoting peace, unity and moral guidance within their communities.
