UNN Postgraduate Students Protest over Power, Water Shortages

Postgraduate students of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka staged a protest on March 16, 2026, over the lack of basic amenities, including electricity and water supply on campus.

The protest followed ongoing concerns among students about living and learning conditions within the institution. Reports indicate that the central water system had experienced issues since February 2026 and had not been restored as of the time of the protest.

Students also raised concerns about prolonged power outages affecting hostels and academic activities within the university community.

The protesting students marched to the office of the Vice-Chancellor, Simon Uchenna Ortuanya, at about 8:15 a.m. to present their grievances.

During the protest, the students called for the restoration of electricity and water supply, payment of cleaning staff, provision of functional generators and improved internet access on campus.

They also highlighted concerns about sanitation and security within the university environment.

Reports from the protest indicate that students relied on alternative water sources, including boreholes, due to the disruption in the central water system.

The protest reflects concerns raised by postgraduate students regarding access to essential services required for academic and residential activities within the university.
