Former Governor of Bayelsa State and Senator representing Bayelsa West, Seriake Dickson, has announced his defection from the Peoples Democratic Party to the Nigeria Democratic Congress.
Dickson, a former governor and prominent member of the PDP, made the announcement while addressing a world press conference.
The development marks a significant shift in his political affiliation after years in the opposition party.
The senator’s decision comes amid ongoing debates about the internal condition and direction of the PDP. Dickson has been associated with the party for years and previously held leadership roles within its political structure.
During the press conference, Dickson said he decided to leave the PDP and join the Nigeria Democratic Congress. He described himself as a man guided by conviction in making the decision.
He also expressed concern about the current state of the PDP, stating that the party was experiencing serious internal challenges. According to him, “the PDP is sick and presently in the ICU.”
Dickson said the country should not become a one-party state and emphasised the importance of maintaining a viable opposition within Nigeria’s democratic system.
The senator also accused some governors elected on the platform of the PDP of undermining the party by aligning with the All Progressives Congress.
He said such actions had worsened the party’s internal crisis and weakened its standing as an opposition platform.
Following his announcement, Dickson was formally received by the leadership of the Nigeria Democratic Congress. He was presented with the party’s official flag and issued a membership card bearing the number “001.”
