The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has said right‑of‑way (RoW) bottlenecks are delaying progress on the 624-megawatt (MW) Abuja power transmission scheme, affecting the project’s implementation timeline, TCN officials confirmed.
TCN said the project, designed to enhance network reliability and power evacuation capacity in Abuja and adjoining areas, has been impacted by challenges securing RoW along transmission corridors earmarked for new lines and infrastructure.
The company said delays in clearing encumbrances on identified land parcels have slowed commencement and mobilisation activities at specific segments of the scheme.
A statement issued by TCN’s Manager of Corporate Communications, Mrs. Ndidi Mbah, said the RoW issues relate to portions of the route between Adu Junction, Abuja North and other sites along the planned transmission alignment.
The company said pending land clearance and relocation of utilities remain key prerequisites before full construction can proceed.
Mrs. Mbah noted that RoW acquisition is central to the schedule for erecting transmission towers, stringing conductors and commissioning associated substations.
Without completing the RoW process, TCN said it could not deploy equipment and crews to critical sections of the intended network upgrade.
The 624MW project aims to strengthen grid capacity and support load evacuation from generation plants to distribution companies serving Abuja and surrounding regions.
Once fully implemented, the scheme is expected to reinforce supply reliability and reduce technical constraints on the national grid.
TCN said it is engaging with relevant stakeholders, including landowners, community representatives and government authorities, to resolve the RoW issues and expedite access to project corridors.
The company noted that successful land clearance will enable full mobilisation of project resources and uninterrupted construction activities.
The transmission upgrade forms part of broader efforts to expand and modernise Nigeria’s power infrastructure, with TCN working in coordination with generation companies and distribution operators to enhance overall system performance and stability.
TCN said resolving RoW bottlenecks will be critical to achieving scheduled project milestones and supporting improved energy delivery for consumers in the Federal Capital Territory and neighbouring states.
