The National Chairman of the All Progressives Grand Alliance, Sly Ezeokenwa, has said politics should not be treated as a full-time career, stressing that politicians should remain engaged in professional work outside public office.
Ezeokenwa made the remark during a media interaction in Lagos where he explained the philosophy and leadership approach of the APGA.
He said the party encourages its members and officials to maintain careers beyond politics to promote responsible governance.
According to him, professional engagement outside government helps reduce the temptation to misuse political positions for financial gain and discourages excessive dependence on political office.
The APGA chairman said the party promotes a political culture where individuals build careers before seeking public office.
He noted that this approach helps ensure that politicians remain productive outside the political system.
He stated that when politicians lack other professional engagements, it could encourage practices such as selling nomination forms or trading party tickets for money.
“In APGA, we try to develop a model of politics that recognises that politics is not a business,” he said.
“People should build careers, and if you are a party officer, you should maintain meaningful professional engagement.”
Ezeokenwa added that he continues to practise law even while serving as national chairman of the party, noting that election petitions form part of his legal practice.
The APGA leader also addressed debates surrounding Nigeria’s Electoral Act. He said laws passed by the National Assembly should not be attributed to one political party because the legislative process involves multiple lawmakers.
According to him, once a law is passed by the National Assembly and signed by the president, it becomes binding on all citizens regardless of political affiliation.
