The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) says it will begin using new technology tools in 2026 to help manage traffic problems and respond more quickly to road incidents, officials said on Wednesday, January 14, 2026.
Mr Sola Giwa, the Special Adviser to the Lagos State Governor on Transportation, said the move is part of a plan to make traffic management better and faster.
He said LASTMA will rely more on real-time surveillance cameras, data systems and rapid-response tools rather than just traditional traffic control methods.
Giwa spoke during a gathering to honour LASTMA officers and workers for their service. He said the new approach will help reduce road crashes and cut down the time it takes to respond when incidents happen on Lagos roads.
“In 2026, LASTMA will move beyond routine traffic control to proactively manage road incidents,” Giwa said, noting that technology will be key to improving traffic safety across the state.
Officials said the plan includes using cutting-edge devices and systems that can monitor traffic in real time and provide data that supports faster action when there are crashes or other road emergencies.
This is part of efforts to make Lagos highways safer for drivers, passengers and pedestrians.
The Lagos State Government has been investing in technology and systems to modernise how traffic is managed. LASTMA has already used digital tools to catch traffic offences and improve enforcement in recent years.
LASTMA has asked residents to work with officers and obey traffic rules so that the new technology can be even more effective in keeping order on busy Lagos roads.
Next steps: Officials say the new tools and systems will be introduced over the coming months, with training for officers and public awareness campaigns planned to help road users understand the changes and benefits.
