APC extends caretaker committees tenure in Ekiti and Osun states

APC extends caretaker committees tenure in Ekiti and Osun states following a meeting of the National Working Committee of the All Progressives Congress in Abuja.

The decision affects the party’s organisational leadership in both states as internal congresses remain scheduled but incomplete.

In a statement signed by the National Publicity Secretary, Badaru Abubakar, the party announced that the tenure of the two state caretaker committees, originally due to expire, was extended to facilitate continuity while congresses are concluded.

The caretaker committees in the two states were constituted in June 2023 to manage party affairs and provide transitional leadership pending completion of elective processes.

The extended tenure covers the Ekiti State Caretaker Committee chaired by Cornelius Ojelade and the Osun State Caretaker Committee led by Teslim Kolawole.

Both committees have oversight responsibilities for day‑to‑day party administration, membership mobilisation, and preparation for internal congresses.

The committees will continue to carry out their mandate until further notice from the party’s national leadership.

According to the party’s statement, the extension was necessary “to ensure seamless coordination of party activities in the two states” while the congresses proceed across wards, local government areas, and state levels.

It emphasised that the extension does not constitute a departure from the party’s constitution or electoral timetable but represents an interim arrangement approved by the National Working Committee.

The APC’s decision follows previous extensions of caretaker committee tenures in states where congress processes have encountered logistical or procedural delays.

Party leaders have said that completing internal congresses is critical to strengthening grassroots structures and preparing for general elections.

The staggered pace of congresses in various states has led to a series of tenure adjustments for interim committees.

Officials noted that the APC extends caretaker committees tenure to allow party executives in Ekiti and Osun to finalise membership registers and coordinate electoral engagements at ward and local government levels.

This includes vetting aspirants, organising training for party agents, and overseeing dispute resolution mechanisms connected to internal primaries.

In Ekiti State, the caretaker committee has been guiding party operations in the run‑up to the governorship cycle and local government engagements.

The committee also supervises interactions with key stakeholders, including community leaders, political actors, and party delegates, to sustain organisational cohesion.

Similarly, the Osun State Caretaker Committee has been responsible for consolidating grassroots structures and managing engagements with party members across the state’s local councils.

The extension decision occurred amid ongoing preparations by the APC for upcoming general elections.

The party’s national leadership has reiterated the importance of completing congresses and primaries to align organisational structures ahead of election cycles.

Extending statewide caretaker committees is part of that broader strategy to ensure the party’s internal cohesion and readiness.

Experts in political party administration say the APC extends caretaker committees tenure to maintain continuity and avoid leadership vacuums that could disrupt grassroots mobilisation.

They also note that a seamless transition from interim committees to substantive executives can enhance organisational stability.

The party did not specify a new deadline for the committees’ tenure, stating that the extension will remain effective “until internal congresses are concluded.”

The national leadership assured stakeholders that congress processes are progressing in accordance with the party’s constitution and that timelines will be communicated to members as they are finalised.

The extension of caretaker committee tenures in Ekiti and Osun reflects ongoing efforts by the APC to manage internal party affairs while navigating procedural timelines and logistical complexities ahead of future electoral engagements.
