Stakeholders Highlight Security, Budget, and Student Support as Key Expectations for 2026

Education stakeholders across Nigeria have identified enhanced security measures, prudent budget management, and improved student support as critical priorities for 2026. The observations were shared during recent forums and consultations with policymakers, school administrators, and education experts, who emphasized the need for comprehensive planning to ensure effective outcomes in the new academic year.

Representatives from higher education institutions and student organizations highlighted that safety remains a pressing concern, citing previous incidents of campus insecurity and disruptions that have affected learning. They called for targeted interventions to protect students, faculty, and institutional assets. According to Dr. Ijeoma Ude, an academic policy analyst, “Ensuring a secure environment for students is foundational to achieving academic excellence and maintaining public confidence in our educational system.”

In addition to security, stakeholders stressed the importance of budget discipline and transparency. They underscored that the efficient allocation of resources is crucial for sustaining academic programs, funding infrastructure projects, and addressing rising operational costs. School administrators noted that meticulous financial planning can prevent delays in staff remuneration, facility maintenance, and procurement of educational materials.

Student support was also emphasized as a vital area for improvement. Stakeholders advocated for expanded counseling services, mentorship programs, and initiatives that enhance the value of learning for students. Ms. Funke Adegboye, a representative of a national student association, stated, “Beyond academics, students need guidance, emotional support, and resources that help them navigate both personal and educational challenges. Addressing these areas strengthens outcomes and retention.”

The discussions further addressed the integration of value management practices within educational institutions, encouraging systematic evaluation of programs and projects to maximize impact. Experts believe that linking budgetary allocations to measurable student and institutional outcomes will foster accountability and improve overall quality.

With the 2026 academic year underway, education stakeholders are advocating for coordinated efforts between government agencies, school administrators, and community organizations to implement these priorities. The emphasis on security, sound budgeting, and comprehensive student support reflects a commitment to improving the standard of education while ensuring sustainable, long-term benefits for students and institutions alike.
