Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, has renewed his support for President Bola Tinubu’s bid for a second term in the 2027 presidential election, describing the President as a son of Osun State.
Adeleke made the declaration on Sunday during a press conference following his victory in the August 15 governorship election. The governor also praised Tinubu for what he described as his commitment to ensuring a free, fair and credible election in Osun.
“At this point, I must deeply appreciate Mr. President, His Excellency Senator Bola Ahmed Tinubu, for his strong support for a free and fair election,” Adeleke said.
He added, “Mr. President is a son of Osun State, and I hereby reaffirm my earlier endorsement of him for a second term in the 2027 presidential election.”
The governor had previously declared his support for Tinubu’s 2027 ambition despite his political journey through the Peoples Democratic Party before joining the Accord Party ahead of the Osun election. Adeleke was declared winner of the poll at about 7:24am on Sunday by the State Returning Officer, Prof. Joshua Ogunwole, Vice-Chancellor of the Federal University, Oye-Ekiti.
The Accord candidate secured 511,067 votes, defeating the All Progressives Congress candidate, Bola Oyebamiji, who polled 444,815 votes. Adeleke won 19 of Osun’s 30 local government areas, while Oyebamiji secured victory in 11. The African Democratic Congress candidate, Najeem Salaam, finished third with 17,180 votes.
The result gave Adeleke a second term in office after his initial election in 2022 on the PDP platform. He subsequently moved to the Accord Party to contest the 2026 election. Following his victory, Adeleke also appealed for reconciliation, describing the election as a contest without a permanent victor or vanquished. He expressed hope that Oyebamiji would accept the result and personally congratulate him.
“This is no victor, no vanquished. I want them to come over. I am expecting Oyebamiji to even, as a civilised person, to call me and congratulate me,” he said.
The governor also acknowledged Tinubu’s congratulatory telephone call after the election, expressing appreciation for the President’s role in the democratic process.
“And of course, I want to seize this opportunity to thank Mr. President. Mr. President has called me and he has congratulated me,” Adeleke said.
He further thanked Tinubu for supporting what he described as the preservation of democracy during the Osun election. Adeleke’s renewed declaration means his political support for Tinubu’s 2027 presidential bid remains in place following his successful re-election as Osun governor.
