The All Progressives Congress (APC) has secured a clean sweep in the Edo LG election, winning all 18 local government chairmanship positions and the 192 councillorship seats contested across the state. The results were announced on Sunday by the Chairman of the Edo State Independent Electoral Commission (EDSIEC), Mr. Jonathan Aifuobhokhan, during a news conference in Benin City.
According to Aifuobhokhan, the commission concluded the collation of results from all wards and local government areas before officially declaring the APC victorious in every elective position contested. He said the election was successfully conducted across the state’s 18 local government areas and 192 wards in compliance with the Edo State Local Government Electoral Law 2022, as amended in 2026, alongside other applicable electoral regulations.
“Based on the official results declared by the returning officers, the commission hereby declares that the All Progressives Congress won the 18 local government chairmanship positions and all the 192 councillorship seats contested in the election,” he stated.
The EDSIEC chairman praised returning officers for carrying out accreditation, voting, sorting, counting, collation and declaration of results professionally and in line with the law. He noted that the Edo LG election was largely peaceful despite minor operational issues experienced in a few polling locations.
According to him, those challenges did not significantly affect either the conduct or the outcome of the exercise. Aifuobhokhan added that the commission would continue reviewing its procedures and engaging stakeholders to strengthen future local government elections in the state.
The commission commended Governor Monday Okpebholo for creating what it described as an enabling environment for the electoral body to perform its constitutional responsibilities. It also acknowledged the contributions of political parties, candidates, traditional rulers, religious leaders, civil society organisations, community leaders, youth and women groups, as well as voters for maintaining peace throughout the poll.
The Nigeria Police Force, other security agencies, election observers, media organisations and EDSIEC personnel—including electoral officers, presiding officers, returning officers, ICT officials and logistics teams—were also recognised for their roles in the successful conduct of the election.
Aifuobhokhan urged political actors to place the interests of grassroots development above partisan differences and encouraged dissatisfied parties to pursue any grievances through the legal channels provided under Nigerian law. He also announced that certificates of return would be presented to the newly elected chairmen and councillors on Monday.
Responding to questions from journalists, the EDSIEC chairman explained that the few operational challenges recorded during the Edo LG election were mainly routine human errors, including delays experienced by some voters while locating their names on the register. The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reported that 12 political parties participated in the election, while major opposition parties, including the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) and African Democratic Congress (ADC), boycotted the exercise.
