Nigeria Unveils Critical Minerals Roadmap to Drive Green Industrialisation

Nigeria is advancing its Nigeria green industrialisation agenda with the unveiling of a strategic roadmap aimed at transforming the country’s critical mineral resources into a catalyst for clean energy manufacturing, industrial expansion and long-term economic growth. The roadmap, developed by the Council for Critical Minerals Development in the Global South, was presented to the Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Dele Alake, during the 5th African Natural Resources and Energy Investment Summit 2026.

The report outlines strategies for leveraging Nigeria’s abundant lithium, copper and bauxite deposits to establish domestic industries, strengthen mineral beneficiation and attract investment into green manufacturing. It forms part of the Federal Government’s broader efforts to move away from exporting raw minerals and instead develop integrated value chains that support industrialisation, job creation and the country’s transition to clean energy.

Receiving the report, Alake said the roadmap provides a practical framework for aligning Nigeria green industrialisation goals with the nation’s vast mineral resources. According to him, the report analyses domestic demand for solar photovoltaic (PV) systems, battery energy storage technologies and electric vehicles alongside existing supply and trade patterns.

The minister said the findings confirm that Nigeria possesses the strategic mineral resources needed to support both its energy transition and the development of local processing and manufacturing industries.

“By mapping domestic demand, supply and trade patterns, this report provides mineral-specific policy pathways to leverage Nigeria’s resources for our own green industrialisation,” Alake said.

He added that the roadmap would guide future policy reforms designed to strengthen mineral beneficiation, encourage local value addition and improve linkages between the mining sector and manufacturing industries. According to the minister, expanding domestic processing capacity will enable Nigeria to retain more value from its natural resources while creating additional economic opportunities.

Industry analysts believe the strategy could improve Nigeria’s appeal to investors seeking dependable critical mineral supply chains as global demand for battery metals and clean energy technologies continues to grow. The roadmap is also expected to position Nigeria more competitively within the international critical minerals market by supporting investment in value-added production rather than raw material exports.

Officials disclosed that the next phase of the initiative will focus on developing a mineral-to-manufacturing localisation roadmap, promoting South-South investment partnerships and strengthening collaboration with domestic stakeholders.

The programme is expected to accelerate projects that support Nigeria green industrialisation, while advancing the Federal Government’s objective of transforming the mining sector into a major contributor to industrial growth, export expansion and non-oil foreign exchange earnings. By strengthening local processing and encouraging greater private sector participation, the roadmap aims to unlock the full economic value of Nigeria’s critical mineral resources and support sustainable industrial development.
