New satellite plan execution has commenced as the Federal Government advances Nigeria’s next communication satellite programme, with launches scheduled for 2028 and 2029.
The move signals a transition from planning to implementation in the country’s space and digital infrastructure strategy.
The Managing Director of NIGCOMSAT Limited, Jane Nkechi Egerton-Idehen, disclosed the development during the 2026 Satellite Week in Abuja.
She confirmed that procurement processes have been concluded and the programme has now entered financing and implementation phases.
“We have started the process. You guys know we have closed the tender. Now we are back into the financing and implementation stage. 2A is due to come out in 2028. And 2B for 2029,” she stated.
The satellite plan execution phase involves the deployment of NIGCOMSAT-2A and NIGCOMSAT-2B, which are expected to enhance communication capacity, data transmission, and national coverage.
Officials noted that the satellites will support real-time connectivity, especially in underserved and remote areas where terrestrial infrastructure remains limited.
Government officials explained that the satellites will also play a role in national security operations.
The systems are expected to support surveillance, intelligence gathering, and coordination among security agencies.
This capability is considered critical as Nigeria strengthens its security infrastructure and response systems.
The Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Bosun Tijani, described the initiative as part of a broader effort to expand Nigeria’s digital backbone.
He noted that satellite infrastructure complements investments in fibre networks and telecommunications systems aimed at improving nationwide connectivity.
According to him, Nigeria remains a key player in satellite communications within West Africa.
The expansion under the satellite plan execution is expected to reinforce the country’s position as a regional hub for digital services and communication infrastructure.
The programme is also aligned with national economic objectives. Satellite-enabled connectivity is expected to support sectors such as agriculture, education, healthcare, and logistics.
Officials highlighted that improved data access can drive productivity, enable innovation, and enhance service delivery across both public and private sectors.
The Director-General of the National Space Research and Development Agency, Seidu Mohammed, stated that Nigeria has built significant technical capacity in space science.
He said the country has over 300 PhD holders and about 6,000 personnel in the sector, reflecting long-term investment in human capital development.
Experts note that the satellite plan execution comes at a time when global demand for digital services continues to grow.
