Expert Calls for AI Integration in Teaching and Learning of Mathematics

An education expert has called for the integration of artificial intelligence tools into the teaching and learning of mathematics at all levels of the educational system, particularly in senior secondary schools and universities, the expert said.

The call was made by Dr. Olugbenga Adeyemi, a mathematics education specialist. He spoke during a lecture organised by the Mathematical Association of Nigeria at the University of Ibadan, where stakeholders in mathematics education gathered to discuss strategies for improving mathematics performance in Nigeria.

Dr. Adeyemi said artificial intelligence technologies have the potential to enhance students’ understanding of mathematical concepts.

He said AI tools can provide personalised learning experiences by adjusting lessons to individual student needs.

He also said AI could help teachers by automating routine tasks such as grading, assessment, and generating practice exercises. According to him, this would allow instructors to focus more on conceptual teaching and student engagement.

In his remarks, Adeyemi highlighted examples of AI applications such as intelligent tutoring systems, adaptive learning platforms, and simulation tools that could be incorporated into mathematics curricula to support classroom instruction.

He said the use of AI technologies could support differentiated instruction, enabling students who struggle with specific topics to receive targeted assistance.

He added that AI can also help identify areas where students commonly make errors and provide additional practice in those areas.

Adeyemi said professional development for mathematics teachers should include training on how to apply AI tools effectively in the classroom. He said building teachers’ capacity in technology integration is crucial to successful adoption.

He also noted that partnerships between educational institutions, technology developers, and policymakers could facilitate the integration of AI into mathematics education. He said such collaboration could help align technological tools with curriculum needs.
