Fresh political calculations ahead of the 2027 general elections could lead to changes in the cabinet of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, as at least four ministers are reportedly considering resigning their appointments to pursue governorship ambitions in their respective states.
Investigations revealed that the ministers are positioning themselves for state-level contests, particularly in states where incumbent governors will complete their constitutionally allowed two terms in 2027.
Among those mentioned are Adebayo Adelabu, Muhammad Ali Pate, Yusuf Maitama Tuggar, and Nkeiruka Onyejeocha.
The development follows the release of a revised electoral timetable by the Independent National Electoral Commission, which fixed party primaries between April 22 and May 20.
Under Section 88(1) of the Electoral Act 2026, political appointees are prohibited from participating in party conventions, congresses, or primaries as aspirants or delegates while still holding appointed positions.
The provision means ministers, commissioners, special advisers, and other political appointees must resign their offices before contesting in party primaries.
Barring any last-minute change of plans, Adelabu is expected to resign his position as Minister of Power in the coming weeks to pursue the governorship ticket in Oyo State under the All Progressives Congress.
Adelabu previously contested the Oyo State governorship election in 2023 but lost to Seyi Makinde of the Peoples Democratic Party.
